Chanos chanos (Forksal)
Common name: Milk Fish
Local name: Bangus
Milkfish, or more commonly known as bangus, has a greenish-grey top and silvery sides. The young are born in the ocean, but make their way into estuaries, mangroves, bays, and lakes to continue their growth. They live throughout much of the Indian and Pacific Oceans and feed on sea moss and grow rapidly.
Milk fish is a popular choice amongst those in Indonesia and is even considered by many to be the national fish of the Philippines. There are multiple methods of consumption in different regions. Some smoke, ferment, or dry the meat. Others eat it fresh or freeze it, and some even bottle the meat.
